What Is Learning Disability Support at Home?

Learning disability support involves skilled, person-centred assistance for adults with learning disabilities — helping them to live as independently as possible, participate fully in their communities, and develop the practical skills they need to thrive.

A learning disability is a condition that affects intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, typically present from birth or early childhood. It is not an illness and it is not a barrier to a fulfilling, connected, and purposeful life. With the right support in place, adults with learning disabilities can achieve extraordinary things — and it is our privilege at Direct2U to be part of that journey.

Our learning disability support service is built entirely around the individual. We begin by understanding the person — their strengths, interests, aspirations, communication style, and the areas where they would like support or development. We then design a support plan that works towards their own goals, at their own pace, with their own voice at the centre of every decision.

Our support workers are trained in positive behaviour support, active support, and person-centred approaches — and above all, they are chosen for their genuine commitment to empowering the people they work with.

Our Approach to Learning Disability Support

Person-Centred Active Support

We use active support principles to maximise participation in everyday activities — ensuring the person we support is always doing as much as they are able to, with support stepped down or increased as needed.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Our support workers are trained in PBS — understanding the function of behaviour, identifying triggers, and responding with consistent, proactive strategies that reduce the need for reactive interventions.

Communication First

We adapt our communication style to each individual — whether Makaton, visual aids, object cues, social stories, or simply speaking slowly and clearly. Being understood matters above all else.

Goals and Aspirations

Support plans are built around what the individual wants to achieve — whether that is learning to travel independently, getting a job, joining a social group, or simply making their own breakfast for the first time.

Family and Carer Partnership

We work closely with families and existing carers at every stage, sharing information openly, involving them in planning decisions, and maintaining consistent approaches across the whole support network.

Rights and Self-Determination

Every person we support has the right to make choices, take risks, and live their life on their own terms. Our role is to enable — not to control — and we take this responsibility seriously.

A Day in the Life with Direct2U Support

Every day looks different depending on the individual's support plan and aspirations. Here is an example of how a typical supported day might unfold:

8:00am

Morning Routine

Support worker arrives and encourages the individual through their own morning routine — washing, dressing, and breakfast — with as much independence as possible.

9:30am

Travel Training

Together they practise the bus route to the local college, building the confidence and skills needed to eventually travel independently.

11:00am

College Session

The individual attends their vocational skills class. The support worker accompanies for the first part, then waits in the café to allow some independent engagement.

1:00pm

Lunch Out

They visit a local café for lunch — the individual orders their own meal and pays with support, practising money and social skills in a real-world setting.

3:00pm

Life Skills at Home

Back home, they work together on laundry — sorting colours, loading the machine, and hanging items to dry. Everyday tasks become confidence-building opportunities.

5:00pm

Handover and Planning

The support worker completes the daily log and discusses tomorrow's plans with the individual, ensuring they feel informed, involved, and looking forward to the day ahead.

Arranging Learning Disability Support with Direct2U

We work closely with individuals, families, and Local Authority teams to arrange the right support package from day one.

1

Free Assessment

We conduct a thorough, free assessment — getting to know the individual, their abilities, communication style, support needs, and goals. We approach this as a conversation, not a form-filling exercise.

2

Person-Centred Support Plan

Working collaboratively with the individual, family, and professionals, we develop a fully personalised support plan that reflects the individual's own goals and priorities.

3

Support Worker Matching

We carefully match a support worker whose skills, experience, and personality are a strong fit — respecting any preferences about gender, background, or communication approach.

4

Support Begins, We Review Regularly

Support begins at the agreed frequency and times. We review the support plan regularly in partnership with the individual and their network, updating it as goals are achieved.

Funding Learning Disability Support

Learning disability support may be funded through several routes. Our team can help you understand the options and navigate the process.

Local Authority Personal Budget

Adults with learning disabilities are entitled to a needs assessment from the Local Authority. If eligible, a personal budget is allocated to fund support — managed directly or taken as a direct payment. Direct2U works with all major North London boroughs.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

Adults with learning disabilities who also have significant health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. Direct2U works with NHS CHC commissioners to deliver packages addressing both health and social support needs.

Direct Payments and Personal Budgets

What Families Say About Our Learning Disability Support

Mother of a Direct2U learning disability support client in Enfield sharing her experience — specialist LD support in North London
“My son has Down’s syndrome and for years I worried about what would happen to him when I could no longer be his primary carer. Direct2U have given us both the most extraordinary gift — independence. His support worker has worked with him patiently and consistently for two years. He now travels to college alone, cooks his own breakfast, and has a social life I never thought possible. He is flourishing. We both are.”

— Gloria A., mother of a Direct2U learning disability support client, Enfield
